Vancouver is in for a treat this fall when the inaugural Capture Photographic Festival kicks-off on October 1st! For 6 weeks Capture will celebrate and promote photography, showcasing the very best of local and international talent in both public space and commercial galleries.

The Canada Line Public Art Program will host up to 6 photo-based installations at various stations in Vancouver from Waterfront to Marine Drive; YVR Airport will also be presenting a piece at The Canada Line YVR Station. We are excited about this collaboration and to the opportunity to continue to engage Vancouver residents and visitors alike as they share experiences through public art.  The presentation of exceptional photographic work by Capture Photo Festival will be undoubtably be a highlight in our diverse art program and in Vancouver.  Although the festival will end mid-November, the installations at The Canada Line stations will remain for 6 months.

Billboards throughout the city will also showcase Capture content for the duration of the festival. Several other large-scale installations are in the works. Capture Curated Exhibitions will showcase Vancouver’s emerging photographic talent alongside exhibitions by leading professionals.

“I think there’s a collective need to see something like this happen in Vancouver,” says festival Director, Julie Lee, “something that celebrates and promotes lens-based art for many reasons: for our history of photography, because we have so many well-known photoconceptualists, and because there’s a burgeoning photography scene here.”

“The general public is much more into cameras and photography than it ever has been before,” Lee says. “I think Capture will appeal to those who are interested in art and in community events.”

We can hardly wait!

EXPLORE Vancouver via The Canada Line!

The Canada Line is not just for commuters slogging to and from work, nor is it only for travelers making their way to and from the airport; it’s a great way to explore our wonderful city! The Canada Line is also a fun way for visitors to spend a day (or more) getting to know Vancouver.

For anyone traveling from one of British Columbia’s rural communities or Vancouver Island  to Vancouver by air, start your day with Pacific Coastal Airlines. Did you know that Pacific Coastal Airlines flies to 65 locations within BC which means you can get to YVR from almost anywhere (wheeled & float aircraft)! From Anahim Lake to Williams Lake and many more communities in between Pacific Coastal makes the trip a breeze. Once you arrive at the South Terminal you board the free shuttle to YVR and The Canada Line. Other options include Helijet and Harbour Air to Vancouver Harbour steps away from The Canada Line Waterfront station.

Pacific Coastal

Pacific Coastal Airlines connects to The Canada Line from almost ANYWHERE in BC!

Only have one day to spend in Vancouver? Not a problem, for example, leaving from Victoria Airport the first flight departs at 6:45 a.m. and arrives 7:10 a.m., last flight home departs at 20:00. That gives you 12 hours to spend in our fair city.

I suggest buying a daily pass for The Canada Line. You will want to hop on and hop off at many of the stations on the line. (*)

Be sure to check out The Canada Line website www.thecanadaline.com when you are putting together your itinerary for a day in Vancouver. The website is full of helpful information such as a Station Maps, listing shops, stores, and businesses you will find at any given stop on the Line. There is almost always something happening on the Line so check out the Events for entertainers, plays, musical performances, and more.  One of my favourite things to do on the Line is view the art installations on temporary exhibit at The Canada Line stations, Art on the Line has all you need to know to plan your very own art tour.

Each The Canada Line station has it’s own unique points of interest. Each of these communities have something special to offer the visitor or traveler. The stations of The Canada Line are lively, exciting and above all welcoming. When on the Line you can visit art galleries and museums, take a walk in a nearby park, attend a sports event, shop till you drop from an eclectic mix of shops and stores for all tastes and budgets, explore a local night market or a Saturday farmer’s market featuring home grown produce, or the casino where an array of entertainers and games of opportunity await. If you’re planning to stay overnight The Canada Line stops steps away from Vancouver hotels.

The Canada Line runs from the City of Richmond and YVR Vancouver Airport to the heart of downtown Vancouver. You can easily access the line from south end Richmond Brighouse station or directly from the airport or if you have arrived at Vancouver Harbour you board at Waterfront station. Easy access to the entire route as well as connections to the Expo Line and Millennium Line of the Skytrain, numerous transit buses and the Seabus.

On this date in 1917, the battle of Vimy Ridge began. The victory would influence the outcome of the First World War and place Canadian troops among the world’s elite, after both British and French attempts to take the ridge failed.

But the victory came with a terrible price, as 3,598 Canadians died in the six-day battle.

Another 7,000 were wounded. After careful training and rehearsal, and supported by almost 1,000 artillery pieces, the four Canadian divisions attacked at 5: 30 a.m., along a 6.4-kilome-tre front near Arras, France. It was the first time the Canadians had attacked together.

The Canadian Corps was attacking heavily fortified high ground that held a commanding view over the Allied lines. The Canadians advanced over an open graveyard, since previous French attacks had failed with over 100,000 casualties.

On the third day, Hill 145, the highest and most important feature of the Ridge, and where the Vimy monument now stands, was captured in a frontal bayonet charge against machinegun positions.

Three more days of costly battle delivered final victory.

In 1922, the French government ceded to Canada in perpetuity Vimy Ridge, and the land surrounding it.

BURLESQUE TO BROADWAY

Category: Music & Live Entertainment
Event Date: April 6th, 2013
Starting: 8:00 pm

With one show-stopping number after another, Burlesque to Broadway splashes onto the stage starring Quinn Lemley, her two sexy sidekicks, Gracie and Raz and a sizzling big band! Quinn and her girls will transport you into the world of The Ziegfeld Follies, Minsky’s and classic Broadway in a fast-paced performance celebrating the women who went from burlesque to Broadway and beyond. Directed by Tony Award winner, Joseph Hardy, Burlesque to Broadway dazzles audiences with sequined and feathered costumes, hard hitting music from Ruth Etting to Tom Jones along with the classic jokes and pokes of the era.

Quinn Lemley is a throwback to the era of classic nightclub acts. She pays tribute to the “Queen of Comedy” Fanny Brice, Sally Rand and her fan, Gypsy Rose Lee, Mae West, Sophie Tucker and others that defined burlesque and illuminated Broadway. Burlesque gave these women the American dream … to earn a living, see the world and for the lucky, create a legacy. Don’t miss this critically acclaimed production as Quinn and the girls sing and dance up a storm with such unforgettable hits as “Hey Big Spender”, “Ten Cents a Dance”, “Let Me Entertain You”, “My Heart Belongs to Daddy”, “Bang, Bang”, “She’s A Lady” and many other surprises.

Audiences from New York to Los Angeles have met the show with standing ovations and now it’s your chance to “celebrate the art of the tease” when Burlesque to Broadway comes to the River Rock Casino Resort for one night only on April 6, 2013.

Salmon are an iconic part of the British Columbian identity, and important to the economy and the culture of this region. With the announcement of more funds for the Pacific Salmon Foundation in last week’s federal budget and the opening of a new public art installation at the Canada Line’s City Center Station, Jim Breukelman’s Fish Ladder: Salmon in the Capilano rings in a big week for salmon in the city.

InTransit BC’s (ITBC) Canada Line Public Art Program supports emerging and established artists by providing space for public art in highly visible locations along the Canada Line route in Vancouver.  The exhibit themes and types of media are very broad, featuring photography, sculpture, text based artwork and posters in nine stops along the Line, and often feature the work of artists from Emily Carr, the UBC Art Department, and Langara College.

Public art creates eye catching conversation pieces about the culture of this region as we move through our city on Transit. Jim Breukelman’s piece collaborates with the City of Vancouver’s Public Art Program, where they are able to exhibit local, national and international established artists.
